Catharsis in action!!

Pack in for @troykingi and @delaney_davidson, a show which we had set up on this very stage nearly a year ago, when the news of a national lock-down broke. With audience gathering in the foyer, the show was postponed, and pack-out began, a somber marker to what became a near 5-month hiatus in working on live events.

While we’re not out of the woods Covid-wise, we’re thrilled to be able to welcome these awesome people back to the venue. To finally see the show will be great, yes, but there’s some serious closure points on offer too.

Yesterday was very special, to support @arianatikao and Bob Bickerton for the debut of their new work as the duo Muriwai.

Their performance was a journey of ages past and a peer into the future, featuring original waiata and soundscapes utilizing live looping to layer and showcase the diverse range of tones and textures of Taonga Puoro, traditional Māori instruments.

It was an aural feast, and an absolute pleasure to be a part of.

Loving this ear protection from @phonak

Comfortable, discrete and really nice sounding - considering it’s taking a whole bunch of unnecessary energy out of what reaches your ears.

So impressed, we picked up a set of these ear plugs for each of our team members from our pal Jackie at #littlebirdaudiology

While you won’t find us wearing them while on sound engineering duties, they’re great to pop in any other time when SPL’s start getting up and it’s not critical to be exposed.

Compared to a typical foam plug, the top end is really natural which means you can still communicate with others, and hear a lot of high frequency detail, just at a lower level. It’s a genuine attenuation, rather than the sense of isolation, which is amazing.

Shows are loud, it’s often challenging for them to be anything but.

Whether you’re onstage, backstage or in an audience, these are a great tool to look after your one set of ears, so they will go the distance.

An exciting delivery from @mdrlighting arrived at the @nelsoncentreofmusicalarts

This represents the first major upgrade to the Nelson School of Music Auditorium lighting rig since the mid-80’s when the current fixtures were installed!!

All 20 of these modern LED wash units combined will consume the equivalent of just one current fixture, produce almost no heat for performers, and can blend seamlessly from a warm or cool white light, to fully-saturated vivid colours - enabling more emotive and creative lighting designs.

We’ve been working with the current units for the past decade of their near-40-year tenure, and couldn’t be prouder to help bring this aspect of the facility into the modern era.

Thanks to MDR Lighting for all their support, and the NSOM endowment trust for unleashing some funding. (But don’t get too cozy, there’s still more to do!)

Sound, lighting and AV duties for the 79th Thomas Cawthron Memorial Lecture last week.

As well as the live components, we provided a dedicated broadcast audio mix to our pals at @lotech.media who were live-streaming the event.

The full event remains viewable on the Cawthron Science Institute’s website.

- About -

Our children’s climate and how we can make a difference.

Keynote address by Professor Bronwyn Hayward, with supporting presentation by Te Rerekohu Tuterangiwhiu.

“As adults we are leaving a chaotic legacy behind us, our inaction is creating a precarious future of significant environmental, social, and economic risk, growing inequality and weakening democracies. Yet there are actions we can and should take now to enable a ‘long view’ in policy and science decision making.”

We are just loving reconnecting with our community of performing and technical artists after what feels like forever.

Last night, our good friends, The New Zealand String Quartet performed in the Nelson School of Music Auditorium as a part of their First Light National Tour - and it won’t be long until we welcome them back for the delayed 2022 Adam Summer School.

Thanks to MDR Lighting for all their support, and the NSOM endowment trust for unleashing some funding. (But don’t get too cozy, there’s still more to do!)
An exciting delivery from @mdrlighting arrived at the @nelsoncentreofmusicalarts This represents the first major upgrade to the Nelson School of Music Auditorium lighting rig since the mid-80’s when the current fixtures were installed!!
