Technical services for live performance venues and events

Nau mai, haere mai!

VenueTech is a small team with a big passion for the technical production of live performance events.

We have been providing technical management to Whakatū Nelson venues for nearly a decade and have amazing clients, including the Theatre Royal and Nelson Centre of Musical Arts.

We also provide live sound and audio engineering services to a wide range of events, including Head of Sound duties for the Nelson Arts Festival since 2016.

In all of our work areas, we pride ourselves on having high technical proficiency and low-stress levels. Our core intention is to foster an inclusive, positive and productive culture that enables everyone to perform at their best - whether that be on stage or off.

We also encourage the next generation by offering educational workshops, Internships, and sponsoring tech-focused awards at regional secondary schools.

Feel free to explore our site, and don't hesitate to get in touch if you have questions.

Ngā mihi,

JR Richardson
Director, VenueTech Ltd.

We are excited to introduce the newest member to our team, Olivia Flanagan!

Olivia returns to Whakatū after a 5-year stint in Wellington, where she gained a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Theatre and Mathematics. At the same time, she established herself as a freelance lighting designer and production/stage manager for various productions at BATS and Circa; and events, including CubaDupa, The NZ Improv, NZ Fringe and NZ Comedy Festivals.

Olivia's role with VenueTech is primarily as a Venue Technician for the Theatre Royal, providing on-site support for hirers in their daily operations.

"I expect the theatre's users will appreciate Olivia's experience, perspective and positive attitude backstage. I'm looking forward to how she contributes to developing the role to serve our community hirers best." Says Director JR Richardson.

"We're still a small team, though," Says JR. "We'll all jump into whatever the focus needs to be at the time. So you can expect to see Olivia in whatever space we happen to be.

"We are thrilled to welcome her to the team. Not just because she is the perfect candidate for us, but this happens to mark something of a full circle to our ongoing Internship programme."

JR established a Secondary Schools Technical and Production Internship at the Theatre Royal in 2014. The programme continues today under the VenueTech banner, allowing the experience to include multiple venues, festivals and events.

"Olivia was an early and memorably-diligent product of that pathway in 2015. I was always proud of her trajectory. When it became clear we should look at taking on another person, she was one of the first I approached".

"This new position feels like coming home in more ways than one," Olivia says. "Returning a professional capacity is a true honour."

Olivia joins Venuetech alongside Director JR Richardson and Apprentice Nick Davidsen. When you see her around, please make her feel welcome.

Ever hopeful we’ll be back to live events in soon, we’ve brought our annual venue maintenance forward by 3-months.

Here’s the last @theatreroyalnelson lighting fixture being placed in the ‘Done Pile’ after a service and certification (Thanks, @nick_davidsen).

We can’t wait to get back to events again, and love our mahi more when we know our gear has our back!

We're looking forward to returning to scenes like these, but as the weekend proved - we're still a ways off.

We LOVE hosting incredible artists/shows and their hugely talented crews in our venues. Suppose you want at-scale events in your future life, too; the fastest path is to get vaccinated.

Support your friends and whānau who are still on the fence. Let them know they've coped with worse pricks.

The Entertainment industry relies on level 1 to survive. Lockdowns and distancing are useful tools to protect our community, but the whole no events thing risks the existence of the very people who make them happen. Luckily, there are other tools in the toolbox!

New to the inventory: Some seriously slick radio mic belts that we think casts are going to love to wear.

Made of sweat and bacteria resistant fabric, the pouches are super secure, can be mounted in a vertical or horizontal orientation, and have inbuilt cable management.

The removable belts are available in multiple sizes, are soft and entirely elastic so they move with, not against you.

It’s VAST dance day, a Whakatū high school dance showcase at the @theatreroyalnelson.

This year, @motuekahighschool students are looking after the tech, so this morning has been all about getting Henry, Lucas, Thomas & Ben settled on the venues consoles before rehearsals.
