Technical Management Services

For stage productions, venues and festivals

Technical management is a pretty broad term.

Essentially, technical management is looking after the technical elements (sound, lighting, etc) for something in the domain of live performance. That something could be a concert, stage production, festival, or venue. The role can also be referred to as Technical Director.

Regardless of the project, the title defining the role or whether I am being engaged on a short-term or ongoing basis, I work closely with each of my clients to understand and target their specific needs and provide a tailored solution that delivers the outcomes we establish together.

Technical Management Services Include

But are not limited to:

Document Design

Technical riders for touring shows
If you're taking a show on the road, communicating your production needs to each festival or venue can be a real challenge. I can work with you to create a technical rider, a single concise document for this purpose.

I read well over 200 tech riders a year, so I know exactly what information venues and festivals are looking for.

Venue Technical Specifications
Communicate your venue's critical details to your hirers including dimensions, systems overviews, and equipment inventories.

Procedural documents
Useful guides for venue staff or hirers that explain how to accomplish a particular task.

Equipment Maintenance

Extend the life of your equipment and keep your facility compliant with regular maintenance including:

  • Periodic systems checks
  • Lighting fixture service and repair
  • Annual testing and tagging of electrical appliances including lighting fixtures, speakers, mixing/control desks, extension cables, muti-boxes etc *
  • Annual certification and load testing of rigging components*
  • Fire-retarding of drapery*

I can also source a wide range of technical consumables and spares for common equipment.

*Required under current Health and Safety legislation.

Technical Consulting

Whether you are planning a performance, an equipment purchase or venue upgrade, I can provide you with considered, professional advice.

Each year I work with a wide range of venues, technical systems, production styles and touring professionals. Each production reveals yet more approaches and use of systems, experiences I draw on when reviewing my clients on their intentions.

I have provided technical consulting to The Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, and Suter Theatre refurbishments; secondary schools and countless local and touring productions.

Crew and Equipment Coordination

Production Equipment
Lighting, sound, AV, staging, masking, rigging and more!

I can source production equipment and coordinate freight so everything we need is onsite, on-time.

Technicians & Crew
Whether you need a set of strong arms to help unload the truck or skilled technicians who can design and operate to a high standard.

Training Sessions

I create custom educational workshops.
For groups of one to many, I tailor each session to existing skill levels and can deliver material about various disciplines that fall under technical production, stage-craft or production management.

Suitable for individuals, venues, schools, events, or performance groups of any age. Popular sessions include basic lighting, basic sound, sound design for theatre and lighting design for theatre - or anything you want to learn about.

Artist Tech-Talk

I speak fluent tech, so why not leave those tricky conversations to me?

I can communicate directly with a show's production or technical team, review their plans and provide them with valuable feedback based on my experience and in-depth knowledge of your venue.

Keeping Nelson's premier performance venue online

I am proud to provide Venue Technical Managment services to the Theatre Royal Nelson.

A near-continuous flow of productions streams through this facility each year with an average year seeing 300 days of use with around 200 performances staged. Technical systems receive regular maintenance of the highest standard to ensure reliability and safety for each production

The venue's specifications are meticulously documented to allow confirmed or prospective productions to understand the venue's scale, systems, and equipment inventories. Hirers can download and absorb these plans which in most cases resolve a large portion of their queries before we then engage in detailed conversation via email or phone.

A suite of crew training courses to educate and engage Nelson's incredibly active theatrical community has also been developed with great success.

Pulling together the tech for Nelson Fringe

Nelson Fringe continues to grow each year, presenting an increasing program of original works from local, national and international performers. I was appointed the Technical Director position for the inaugural Festival before taking a year away and returning annually since 2017.

A converted Refinery ArtSpace gallery becomes the Fringe Hub, the main venue for the festival. The 60 seat, staged and draped venue is complete with professional lighting and sound systems. This is all locally-sourced and installed specifically for the festival.

3-4 back-to-back performances are presented each night with a short changeover period between them. This requires a tightly scheduled effort from all parties to set their stage positions, program lights and rehearse cues in a reverse-programme order during the day.

Technical Management of this event encompasses venue & system design, equipment sourcing, crew scheduling, artist tech-talk and document design.

Caring for our cities concert hall

The Nelson Centre of Musical Arts is my newest technical management client after being closed until April 2018 for earthquake strengthening and redevelopment.

My relationship with the venue began in 2010 as a casual technician which continued until their closure in 2015.  I was first re-introduced to the fray as a technical system and venue-use consultant for the redevelopment - a role which evolved naturally into that of Technical Manager.

While a huge part of the business is founded in music education, the 300 seat School of Music concert auditorium and 100 seat recital theatre offer venues suitable for a variety of productions, most notably acoustic music performances.
