Engineering Laughton Kora, Nelson Arts Festival 2017

Live Sound Engineering

I provide professional live sound engineering for Concerts, Musical Theatre & Festivals. I have developed a reputation for delivering great sound to audiences while fostering positive, supportive working environments for my artists and fellow crew.

In addition to engineering services, I also provide sound equipment to meet your specific requirements when working in the Nelson region.

My live sound engineering credits include some of New Zealand's leading musical artists and arts festivals that cover a wide range of genre and performance styles.

Concerts

Live sound engineering for concert performances is one of my core areas of expertise and a personal passion point. What captivates me is the immediacy of exchange that experienced by both the artist and audience.

With this in mind, I place emphasis on producing natural and intimate listening experiences that encourage audience members to engage with their performers.

I am passionate about microphones and take care matching the correct model to each source. This ensures instruments and voices are reproduced as accurately as possible.

In addition to supplying sound equipment, I can also source top-line instruments and backline should they be required.

Musical Theatre

I have extensive experience engineering sound for musical theatre productions - and can confidently take the entire sound department off your plate, delivering you results you will be proud of.

I can source and arrange delivery of top-quality sound equipment including radio mics for your cast, instrument mics for the live band or orchestra and suitable mixing consoles with full scene-recall.

Time in the venue is both limited and expensive, and I understand that. That is why I will regularly engage with the production and creative team to ensure that planning is accurate and days in the venue are productive.

From design to delivery, I will take care of all things sound allowing you to focus your energy elsewhere.

Festivals

I thoroughly enjoy the comradery of an Arts Festival environment.
Banding together with highly-skilled technicians to deliver international-class performances to local audiences is always a highlight of my year.

I have been involved with Nelson's Arts Festival since 2010 and was appointed the Head of Sound in 2016. I take great pleasure in overseeing the 60-odd performances over the 2-week season and strive to deliver our audiences the best possible sonic experience.

In terms of engineering credits, I usually operate a few shows per season in our MainStage and was the Garden Stage engineer for the Auckland Arts Festival in 2015 & 16.

Other festival engineering credits include Nelson Winter Music Festival & Jazz Festivals, Queenstown Jazz Festival, and Byron Bay's Splendour In The Grass.

Equipment Hire

BB Sound - My principal sound production partner

I don't own any live sound equipment, but with unrestricted access to Bob Bickerton's impressive inventory, I simply don't need to.

Bob's range of esoteric equipment sourced from Germany, England, America and Australia is ideal for acoustic live sound production.

His inventory includes a range of Fohhn line-source column PA systems that deliver superb sound at a variety of scales.

Similarly, his impressive collection of stage microphones have been curated specifically for their accuracy in capturing acoustic instruments and voice.

I really listen

It's my job to make good sonic decisions, but I will always take the time to listen to your thoughts or desires about how you want to sound.

I understand it's your performance - My goal is to deliver your material to your audience as you intend it to be received.

Access to the best equipment

As a freelancer, I have experienced a wide range supply companies and their equipment.

Over the years I have developed a fantastic network of equipment hire partners including my principal sound provider BBSound, whose inventory reflects my personal values in delivering the best sound possible.

Qualified and experienced

Before entering the industry, I graduated with a Batchelor of Audio Production from Southern Institute of Technology (S.I.T), Invercargill, NZ as well as The International School of Audio Engineering (S.A.E), Byron Bay Aus in 2009.

My engineering credits (listed below) below speak for themselves.

I've been there

After my studies, I spent 2 years as a touring musician so I understand what it's like to work with a revolving door of sound engineers.

Engineering aside, I place particular emphasis on open communication and creating a supportive environment that lets you focus on your art.
