Internship experience
The VenueTech internship is run in partnership with the Nelson Theatre Royal and Nelson Centre of Musical Arts. This provides an excellent opportunity for a senior secondary school student with a passion for entertainment technology and theatre/event production.
The successful applicant will become an integral part of our team for 6-months, gaining experience through hands-on participation. They will work alongside our technicians in carrying out the scheduled operations at The Theatre Royal, Nelson Centre of Musical Arts and some outside events.
Learning outcomes
Interns build core practical skills across a wide range of technical production disciplines while experiencing a variety of performance styles and production approaches that the various community and professional touring crews bring with them.
Communication, reliability, time management, personal presentation, task completion, problem-solving, and teamwork strong themes within our work and are therefore positive attributes we aim to impress upon our interns.

Applications for Semester 1 close February 14th, 2020
The VenueTech internship is a non-paid role available to secondary students Yr 11 – 13.
Internship period
One complete semester.
Semester 1 = Terms 1 & 2
Semester 2 = Terms 3 & 4
Time requirements
One day each week.
Applicants identify which day they will regularly attend which may be:
- After school on a weekday
- All-day on a school day - when In conjunction with a work experience program
- All-day on a weekend day
Nature of work
Work is primarily carried out within our two venues, The Theatre Royal and Nelson Centre of Musical Arts and can include involvement in other events such as Nelson Fringe Festival (May) or Nelson Arts Festival (October).
Work-load is often determined by the production in each venue, and may include:
- Building or equipment maintenance
- Event planning
- Technical systems prep
- Ticketing and promotional exercises
- Packing shows in or out
- Working alongside crew on the in-house production
- Assisting in the operation of technical systems
